The team flew back to the FBI field office in Oahu for a follow up debriefing with Rachel and SAC Harris. Once both had left, Bella, Aunt Natalie, and the rest of the team got to work figuring out who was Candace Kincaid—and what had placed her on the path of being a ruthless assassin?

“Every background check we tried to rustle up came up blank,” grumbled Keith Benton. “No fingerprints, no DNA, no background, no Social Security, no nothin’.”

“That isn’t too surprising. Even accounting for all the fake names she gave investigators over the years, I can’t imagine any of them were her true identity.”

“Maybe she’s like in Men in Black,” Billy offered, which sent a round of groans through the room. “What? I’m serious. Maybe her employer went through and deleted her from every identifying database there was. Right on down to erasing her fingerprints.”

Bella had to admit he had a point. “But who would have the capacity to do that, Agent Makani? To hack into federal databases, snap their fingers, and erase someone? It would take one hell of a hacker…”

“Or someone with massive resources,” Keith finished. “If they can make a super-killer poison, if they can hire an expert assassin or team of assassins off the books, maybe they could do some computer hacking.”

“It’s looking more and more like Candace’s employer has some pretty deep pockets,” Natalie mused. “But where does it come from? What’s their main source of revenue?”

“Their cover, you mean?” asked George.

She nodded. “Exactly. Where’s the money funding all this—the high-tech bio research, the highly-skilled computer hackers, the international assassins? It adds up, and it has to come from somewhere. Operations like this rise when a major organization—a mega-corporation or a government, maybe a political party or a church or a bank or a mafia—wants to protect its interests.”

George Dwyer whistled. “Are you saying our Candace Kincaid Lincoln was mobbed up?”

“Maybe not in the traditional way. But whatever she was involved in, it was certainly organized, and it was certainly a crime,” Bella noted. “And if we can find a link to wherever she came from, we can find out more about whatever this organization is up to.”

Natalie stood and walked over to view the rolling waves of the sea. Pausing a minute, she seemed to be drifting someplace else in her mind. “And that brings us back to the question we started with: who was she really, Agent Walker? What turned Candace Kincaid—or whatever her real name was, into this sadistic killer?”

“That’s always the big question. Why did they do it?” Bella walked stood and walked over to her aunt. “Do you have any additional resources or contacts that might be able to help?”

Aunt Natalie gave a broad mischievous smile. “I know one sailor who is quite the expert in poisonings.”

“Are you kidding me, Aunt Natalie?” Bella groaned as her aunt shrugged and raised her hands apologetically.
